UiB Seminar: Media Ownership in Europe

The Research Group in Journalism at the University of Bergen (UiB) is pleased to host an open seminar at Meda City Bergen

When

5. March - 12. February.

Time: 14:15 - 16:00

What

The seminar features Tales Tomaz, Assistant Professor of Media Policy and Media Economics at the University of Salzburg and coordinator of the Euromedia Ownership Monitor (EurOMo). He will present the project and explain how EurOMo maps media ownership and control across Europe.

Funded by the European Union, EurOMo currently covers all EU Member States (Norway is not included). The project is based on a collaborative research model with one national team per country, collecting publicly available data on media outlets, ownership, senior management, editorial responsibility, board members, and organised actors that may exert formal or informal influence. The dataset is available through interactive network visualisations and as machine-readable data.

Tomaz will also discuss key conceptual and methodological choices behind the 2025 iteration of EurOMo, including challenges related to fragmented and incomplete ownership data, opaque legal ownership structures, and the difficulty of identifying economic power and informal influence, such as the role of investment funds.

The seminar is open for everyone.
